Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
