Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
