A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
